Terms Must Understand Before Playing Golf in any Golf Course

Golf is a ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit the balls into a series of holes on a golf course in as few strokes as possible. Playing golf if for all ages and is a perfect activity to enjoy with your friends and relatives. We really love playing golf at Sherwood Hills Golf Club and golf course in Cavite. It is a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course.

But just like the other sports, golf has its own world. There are terminologies that are used in playing golf like the birdie, hole, and tee box among others that players should be familiar with. Today, I’ll share with you the basic golf terms that you need to understand to enjoy your playing more.

Birdie - means a score of one under par on a hole. Ex. His birdie on the 9th was the turning point of the game

Bogey – means a score of one over a par on a hole. Ex. That bogey on the 17th cost me the win

Bunker – is a golf course hazard that is a hole in the ground filled in with sand. They are varying in size, shape, and depth. Ex. The greens were protected by shallow bunkers.

Caddie or Caddy – is a person who carries the player’s bag and clubs. HE gives insightful advice and moral support to the player. A good caddie is aware of the challenges and obstacles of the golf course being played.

Choke – it usually refers to a bad shot caused by the player’s inability to handle the pressure of the moment. Ex. He always chokes when all things are on the line. He can’t handle the pressure.

Double Bogey
– is a score of 2-over par on an individual hole. Golf courses are typically designed as par3, par 4, and par 5, so double bogey means scoring a 5 on par 3 hole, scoring a 6 on par 4 hole and scoring a 7 on a par 5 hole. Ex. His double bogey on the 17th ends his hopes winning the crown.

Double Eagle- is a score three under par on an individual hole. You have made a double eagle when you score a 1 on a par 4 hole or a 2 on a par 5 hole. This is also known as ALBATROSS. Ex. Gene Sarazen’s double eagle at Augusta National is one of the famous shots in golf history.

Dormie – is a match play term. It is a point in match play when a player is up in a match with the same number of holes remaining. In an example, three holes up with three holes to play.

Driving Range – is an area where golfers practice their golf swing. It is also a term for the practice area, golf range, practice range or learning center.

Eagle – is the term used when a golfer scores two under par on any individual hole on a golf course. Ex. His eagle on the 17th assured the win.

Par - is the number of strokes a golfer is expected to need to complete an individual hole, either a three, four or five.

Tee Box – it is just another term for teeing ground. The tee box is the starting point on each hole of a golf course. It’s the are covered by the space-in-between two tee markers and two-club-lengths back from the tee markers.



Whiff – means a complete miss, also known as an “air ball”. Ex. I’m so nervous that I whiffed my drive.


These are just the basic terms you might regularly hear while playing golf. There are more terms you need to know but as of now, understanding these will make you a better player.
